Arnold Air Society

Arnold Air Society strives to make cadets better then they think they could be. The Arnold Air Society is a professional, honorary service organization advocating the support of aerospace power. The “service” aspect is perhaps the foremost in the mind of many members, because of the society’s continuing contributions to our campuses, our communities, and our corps – but it should always be remembered that our primary mission is to improve ourselves as future Air Force officers. Here at Detachment 159 we have a long history of participating in veteran events along and our main focus is POW/MIA events. Cadets go through a long 8-10 week training process to become a member. Are you ready for the challenge?

Intramural (IM) Sports

Detachment 159 AFROTC offers many intramural sports teams to encourage our cadets’ involvement in campus activity at UCF. These teams include but are not limited to: Flag Football, Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball.  Participation in Flying Knights intramural teams fosters friendly competition, teamwork, and the Air Force warrior spirit. Additionally, participation in Intramural Sports keeps our cadets prepared for our annual sporting events.

The Flying Knights of Det 159 hold many annual competitions against our neighboring Army ROTC unit, the Fighting Knights. These events of Football, Basketball and Soccer serve to foster friendly competition and build camaraderie between the two neighboring ROTC branches.

Det 159 also participates in the annual Spring Lime Cup where the Flying Knights face off against many other AFROTC Detachments in Florida in a day long multi-sport competition. The Flying Knights take great pride in our strong tradition of success in the annual Lime Cup!

Color Guard

Color Guard is a military formation rendering honors when the National Anthem is played, when passing in review during a parade, or in other events that require a flag detail. At Detachment 159 we have the ability to take any Cadet, with any experience, and convert them into a fully capable Color Guard member. Practices are usually held once to twice a week. During these times Cadets learn proper flag procedures all the way up to how command a detail.

Some of the performances we conduct are at UCF Football games, Air Force Conventions, Veteran Organizations and many more. These events give Cadets opportunities for leadership and camaraderie among Cadets and gives them a chance to experience our great city of Orlando in a different way. So check our Color Guard and come show how disciplined Cadets from Detachment 159 really are!

Drill Team

The AFROTC Detachment 159 Drill Team is an armed exhibition drill team. That is, we perform routines of marching and rifle movements to exhibit the precision and excellence of the United States Air Force. Drill team spends a couple hours every week practicing routines to represent the detachment to the local community through these performances. Dedicated members of the Drill Team can expect to demonstrate their mastery of routines to the other cadets of the detachment and our brother Army ROTC detachment at our annual sporting competitions, as well as to members of the local community at events we’re invited to.

Members of drill team are looked to when our detachment is asked to judge drill competitions among the local Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) detachments. The members of drill team are recognized within AFROTC detachment 159 by a white shoulder cord on their blues uniforms.
